5 Easy Ways to Give Back to Seniors

Show seniors some love by giving back to them.

The myriad ways elders give back to their communities each year, as well as the health advantages of volunteering, were recently featured in a piece we published on the subject. Senior citizens also provide a plethora of chances for volunteer work. Growing older can provide a lot of difficulties, ranging from loneliness to deteriorating health. Volunteering with older adults is a wonderful opportunity to express gratitude to them for their years of service while also making their day a little brighter. When two generations join together in service, it helps to bridge the generational divide, and everyone may walk away with something new to add to their repertoire.

1. Pay a visit to a nursing home or assisted living facility

Plan a visit (or, even better, a series of visits) to an assisted living facility to spend some quality time with someone who may not receive many visitors otherwise. Are you unsure about what to do? Bring a board game, a care gift, a movie, or a home-baked goodie to share with the group.

Assist in the completion of housework or yard maintenance.

Check in on your senior neighbor's home to see if they might use a hand with physical duties such as mowing the grass or vacuuming, as well as other domestic chores or home improvement projects.

3. Instruct students in the use of computers and the internet.

Help elders stay connected by instructing them on how to email their friends and family, read the news, utilize social media, and avoid frauds and viruses to keep them informed and entertained.

4. Provide assistance with errands and transportation.

When elders are no longer able to drive, it becomes more difficult for them to maintain their independence and socialize. You and your partner may go to the grocery store, the hair salon, doctor's appointments, and anywhere else they may need to go together.

Participate in an intergenerational service project of your choosing.

Giving back together is a wonderful approach to build relationships with elders. There are numerous projects that people of all ages and abilities can get involved in, including sending care packages to soldiers, donating used clothing and books, and participating in a community bake sale – the possibilities are virtually limitless!
