Stoke City 2-0 Bolton Wanderers My View

Ill take a look at what I see as the key talking points arising from Wednesday nights 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at the Britannia Stadium, almost exclusively positives.A crucial win, and a comfortable one tooThe victory moves us out of the relegation area and up to fifteenth in the Premier League. It serves to show just how tight the league is at the bottom this season, when one win canmove you a quarter of the way up the table. Its vital for us to get as much as we can from our home games if we are to stay up, and teams like Bolton are ones we really should be looking to beat, so its very pleasing that we did. The comfortable manner of New York Mets Jersey the victory is even more pleasing though, it being our first league succe s by more than one goal for eleven and a half months and Bolton never really threatening. A few more like this would surely keep us up.Abdoulaye Faye congratulates James Beattie after his goal by pulling down his shortsThe Fuller factor too much of a good thing? For our last two games, away at Aston Villa and against Bolton, Ricardo Fuller has been brought on upfront with around half an hour remaining and in both cases has greatly improved our play in a period of the game in which we often seem flat, revitalising our efforts at Villa and scoring on Wednesday. This has been in stark contrast to the lazy, petulant displays he was making a month ago when he was a regular starter. Though hed surely want to play as much as po sible, I feel he is much more effective as an impact substitute, having great joy with his pace and power against tired legs and I feel with James Beattie firing on all cylinders, Fuller should be used in this role for the immediate future. The real great DaneThe best goalkeepers have always bounced back from mistakes to put in great displays and Thomas Sorensen did just that on Wednesday night. In our last two away games at Sunderland and Villa he conceded soft goals, and could easily have shrunk back against a physical Bolton side who constantly hit balls high into the box. Instead, he responded in the Jay Bruce Jersey best po sible manner, putting in a confident and commanding performance, dealing well with everything aerially and saving everything that came his way. A big well done to him.Sorensen impre sed for StokeAndy Wilkinson is getting to be very goodThree months ago, young right-back Andy Wilkinson was nowhere near the Stoke first team. Hw got his chance however, in the absence of the more experienced Andy Griffin, our club captain, and has taken it fantastically, putting in a string of excellent defensive performances. Even in the short time hes been back in the side hes improved remarkably, going from a stopgap solution to one of our best players. He has nearly all the attributes to be a top, top player, though his pa sing leaves a little to be desired. He is fast, strong, good in the tackle, aerially commanding and very aggre sive, getting himself booked against Bolton for a very physical welcome to the game tackle on Ricardo Gardner, seconds after he had come on. Its getting to the stage where Im starting to worry a big club could come in for him, but the best thing is hes a local lad, a Stoke fan and has recently claimed he wants to play at Stoke for his whole career (aged just 24 he is already our longest serving player). I certainly hope he does.A welcome selection headacheWith Fuller pushing for a starting place and winger Matthew Etherington returning from suspension forour triptoEverton next Saturday, Tony Pulis has a definite selection headache. For me the solution is simple though. Fuller is most effective as an impact substitute, so keep it that way, while target man Mamady Sidibe may well cause problems against an Everton backline that is not the tallest in the league. Etherington must be put straight back into our side, he is arguably our best player and was very good before his ban. The question lies in which of Liam Lawrence or Rory Delap is dropped. For me it must be Lawrence. He has looked slightly out of sorts since his recent return from injury and seems to have lost a bit of pace and his ability to beat a man. Delaps long-throws however, are a weapon we shouldnt go without.Trotting their way to mediocrityBolton looked an average side. They enjoyed a lot of the po se sion and looked dangerous from set pieces, but they failed to create anything by the way of genuine chances and fully deserved to Darryl Strawberry Jersey lose. Forward Kevin Davies was the only player who played well for them on the night, making a constant nuisance of himself. They are too well positioned to go down, but judging from Wednesdays performance they will do little more than just stay up.Boltons Matt Taylor was rightly dejected after his sides poor showingPlayer Ratings:Thomas Sorensen (gk): As I have discu sed above, Sorensen had a very good game, doing near everything right and claiming a deserved clean sheet. 9Andy Wilkinson (rb): Another good showing from Wilko, giving Boltons wingers very little chance to impose themselves on the game. 8Ryan Shawcro s (cb): A solid game for Shawcro s, doing little wrong as part of a defence that did very well to limit Boltons attacking moments to speculative efforts. 7Abdoulaye Faye (cb):Abdoulaye was carrying a back injury and was clearly not quite right. He still managed to hold his own in the game and entertain the fans with his typical cool play against his former club though. 7Danny Higginbotham (lb): Higginbotham didnt feature prominently in the game, but was defensively sound. 6Liam Lawrence (rm): I was disappointed with Lawrence. he has seldom played as well in the Premier League as he did Zack Wheeler Jersey last season in the Championship and struggled again on Wednesday. He failed to get the better of opposing left-back Jlloyd Samuel and picked up a booking for a stupid dive when he goit himself into a good position. 5Salif Diao (cm): Diao is a key player for Stoke and despite mi sing almost half our games this season through injury, he has played as we have picked up 26 of our 29 points, a record which speaks for himself. He was poor on the night though, looking flat-footed and continually giving away free-kicks. How he wasnt booked I do not know. 4Glenn Whelan (cm): After scoring our late equaliser at Villa, Whelan was rewarded with a starting place and was clearly keen to impre s. He only ever seems to play well in patches of games though, and this was the case again. When he was involved it was crucial though, as he got two a sists to cap a overall lively performance. 7Rory Delap (lm): Delap played quite well on his return. It was good to see a goal resulting from one of his throw-ins again, something that hadnt appened since November Pedro Martinez Jersey the 1st in our win over Arsenal. 7Mamady Sidibe (cf): Sidibe was largely ineffectual, struggling in his role as header winner against Boltons big centre-backs. He was rightly subtituted early in the second half. 5James Beattie (cf): With every game Beattie looks like a better and better signing. He made a nuisance of himself and showed a clinical streak that will be vital in our bid for survival in taking his chance when it came. With five goals and two a sists in seven games for us, expect Fabio Capello to be down at the Brit soon! 8Subs:Ricardo Fuller (cf): Fuller played well after coming on for Sidibe, looking very lively and putting away his goal with aplomb. 8Amdy Faye (cm): After coming on for Diao, his Senegal teammate Amdy Faye was solid without catching the eye. 6Ibrahima Sonko (cb): Sonko came on with just over fifteen minutes left and showed once again that he is defensively sound but his pa sing is very poor. He is a genuine threat from set pieces and came very close to opening his Stoke account, hitting the cro sbar with an excellent header. 6My Man of the Match:Thomas Sorensen
