ASTRO finally takes No. 1 on free-to-air music show after 1999 days

They didn't give up even when their goal seemed out of reach.

Boy group ASTRO has been around since 2016. Their careers didn’t take off right away, but they didn’t stop trying to make an impact. Their hard work culminated in their first win on a free-to-air music show 1999 days into their debut.

Free-to-air aka public channel music shows like Music Bank, Inkigayo and Show Music Core are harder to score on compared to cable channel music shows like M Countdown, Show Champion, and The Show. M Countdown is considered by viewers to be a public channel music show, but since Mnet is a cable channel, it can’t officially be recognized as one.

ASTRO’s new title track “After Midnight” took first place on Music Bank last August 13. In addition to it being the group’s first win on a free-to-air music show, it was also their first win on Music Bank. ASTRO thanked their fans—collectively known as AROHA—for the win as they teared up on the encore stage.

On August 14, “After Midnight” won Show Music Core with 8,015 points, beating “NAKKA” by AKMU and “Permission to Dance” by BTS. The same song previously won Show Champion and The Show, which means ASTRO has now topped four music shows with it.

Congratulations to Eunwoo, JinJin, MJ, Moonbin, Rocky and Sanha!
