Jeon Somi returns with third solo single, talks I.O.I reunion last May

She and her Produce 101 unnies still support each other.

After releasing the hits “Birthday” and “What You Waiting For,” former I.O.I. center and maknae Jeon Somi—now a decorated soloist under YG Entertainment subsidiary The Black Label—is back with her latest song “DUMB DUMB.”

During her comeback showcase on August 2, Somi explained that “DUMB DUMB” is about a girl with a crush on someone. But when the chorus hits, listeners quickly realize it’s no ordinary love song, because its lyrics have Somi proclaiming to her love interest that she’s actually “dancing on the top of your head, you dumb dumb.”

Critics are calling Somi’s latest single “earworm material” because of its cutesy melody and whistle riff. Meanwhile, the song’s official music video is awash in pastels and, based on a popular concept in South Korea called “high teen,” is set in an American-style high school.

This is Somi’s first comeback in a year. According to her, she spent the last year working on some new material to share with all her supporters. She partnered with former 1TYM member and The Black Label founder Teddy Park (aka TEDDY), as well as producers R. TEE and 24. Together, they came up with “DUMB DUMB.”

For this song, Somi contributed to the lyrics to make it even better. She was more comfortable doing so this time, because by now she knows the recording process like the back of her hand.

“I still had much to learn when we made ‘Birthday’ and ‘What You Waiting For.’ But for ‘DUMB DUMB,’ the whole process went smoothly. The other producers, including myself and TEDDY, are satisfied with the results,” she says.

During the showcase, Somi also talked about her I.O.I. members. In May, they got together for the special online fan meeting called I.5.I - Yes, I love it! which celebrated the fifth anniversary of the group’s debut.

“I had a happy and wholesome time at the reunion. I’m the maknae, so it was really good to be among the unnies again. But we’ve also been meeting up quite often apart from the fan meeting. Whenever we see each other, I play them the songs I’m working on. Last time, they asked me when I’m planning to release something new because they really love my songs and they want to add them to their playlists as soon as possible. They always boost my confidence,” she said.

If, like the I.O.I. members, you can hardly wait for Somi to release more new material, you’re in luck. She says “DUMB DUMB” is just the first of many new songs she’s going to drop this year. She might even drop a mini album or even a full-length set next if this song does well.

Somi’s latest single “DUMB DUMB” is now available for streaming on all digital music platforms.
