BTS replaces themselves on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

"Permission to Dance" debuts at No. 1 while "Butter" stays in the top 10 at No. 7.

It has become a tradition for the BTS ARMY to buy and stream the heck out of everything their ult group releases. The South Korean group’s new single, the Ed Sheeran-assisted bop “Permission to Dance,” is the latest to receive an outpouring of love from fans all over the world.

Thanks to all that love, “Permission to Dance” debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 this week, ending the seven-week reign of their previous single “Butter,” which also debuted at No. 1. With this newest feather in their cap, BTS becomes the first-ever group to replace its own No. 1 debut in the chart’s 62-year history. (Drake did so as a soloist in 2018.)

“Permission to Dance” is also the fourth BTS song to be at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Global 200, and Global 200 Excl. US, the most for any artist. It’s their fifth No. 1 hit on the Global 200, extending their record as the artist with the most leaders. So far, no other artist has managed to notch more than two chart-toppers on the Global 200. Even pop music heavyweights like Ariana Grande and Olivia Rodrigo only have two apiece.

Speaking of Olivia Rodrigo, “Permission to Dance” ended her latest song’s five-week reign atop the Global 200. The punk-flavored kiss-off anthem “Good 4 U” spent a grand total of six weeks at No. 1, but its streak was interrupted by “Butter.”

“Permission to Dance” is BTS’s fifth Hot 100 No. 1, after the hit singles “Dynamite,” “Life Goes On,” the Jason Derulo/Jawsh 685 collab “Savage Love,” and “Butter.” It took the South Korean superstars a little over 10 months to score five No. 1s. No one has managed to do it that fast since Michael Jackson did so over a period of nine months, from 1987 to 1988.

Congratulations to BTS!
